Mozz is set to open at Bellevue Gardens shopping center in February

If you love cheese, you’ll be happy to hear that Newport’s cheese scene is about to get a major update: Mozz (pronounced “words”) is set to open at the Bellevue Mall Gardens in February 2022 and will offer fresh mozzarella di Bufala. daily, as well as other cheeses, breads and imported Italian specialties.

The soon-to-open Italian cheese-making destination, owned by husband-and-wife team Luca and Christina Mignogna, has already excited local turophiles throughout Newport County. Mignonas’ vision for Mozz is to be a sort of “laboratory,” bringing ongoing cheese-making training to the space in addition to pasta-making, pizza-making, fresh-baked bread, and cheese-making. a traditional Italian market.

The Mignonas bring many years of case farming (the art of cheese making) and culinary expertise to Mozz. Luca, who grew up making cheese alongside his grandfather in the Molise region of Italy, worked as a teacher for 6 years at BCAE teaching artisan cheese making and worked in hotel kitchens in 5 star luxury around the world. He founded Wolf Meadow Farm in 2011 and, with Christina’s help, moved the operation to Amesbury, MA, where they built and developed a state-of-the-art Italian creamery that provided Italian-style cheeses like mozzarella and ricotta. to residents and restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Christina, who has a background in business management and catering, focuses on managing all aspects of the business side of cheese making.

Christina tells us Mozz is set to open in February, but with COVID-19 still in sight, that could change. For now, you can get a head start on your fresh cheese in Mozz’s online store by signing up for their Cheese of the Month Club (shipping begins March 2022) or signing up for a cheese making (dates to be determined).

We had the opportunity to ask Christina a few questions about the upcoming opening of Mozz. Keep reading to learn more.

Who are the owners of Mozz and what is their connection to Aquidneck Island?

We live here on Aquidneck Island and have been happy to call this place home since 2020. My dad grew up in RI so we traveled here to be closer to family.

What is the vision of the store and what types of products will be in stock?

The vision of the store is a laboratory; a work in progress. Customers can stop and see cheese making, pizza making, and pasta making, or just come in for a quick coffee or a quick bite to go. Maybe customers only visit for the Italian market or for fresh bread. Entering the store is meant to take you back to your favorite bustling Italian markets. The mozzarella will be fresh daily, reminiscent of caseifici in Italy.

Mozz’s Shop lists cheese making and pasta making workshops. Can you tell us more about this?

Sure! Education has always been an important part of what we do. And sharing is just as important to us. These cheese-making and pasta-making classes allow us all to reconnect with the source by taking simple ingredients and transporting them to fuel your day.

What inspired the owner(s) to open an Italian artisan cheese and bread shop?

Mozzarella is my husband Luca’s first love, so making cheese became a way for him to recreate the beauty of mozzarella when he was unable to find anything comparable in the United States. And it all kind of blossomed from there. Bread came into the picture because it is cheese’s natural friend for life.

Why did you choose Bellevue Gardens as the location for Mozz?

It is a prime, well-maintained location with plenty of parking! We are delighted to be right in the heart of the city, with good complementary neighbors all around us. Honestly, this place popped up before I thought we were ready to open, but it all kind of fell into place like it was meant to be.

When should the store open?

February 2022, assuming all goes as planned!

How has COVID impacted Mozz’s plans and opening date?

COVID seems to be the reason for everything these days! It’s clear that supply chain management has been affected for every business in the world. COVID has also helped us, however, to be more creative in how we reach people’s palates, through online sales, cheese clubs of the month sent straight to your door, or simply our online advance orders and take away. – store model. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that nothing is certain. We will continue to move forward in our guided direction and continue to be flexible and adaptable as best we can while being grateful to the community for their support.
