HOUSTON – Dollar stores are currently part of the fastest growing retail segment. It’s not just buyers trying to save money. Hordes of people flock to Dollar General every week looking for items that cost just a dime. It is a movement that is very successful on social networks. People post and share articles they find for a dime.

How it works

Before going to a Dollar General store, you must join a Facebook group. Just search for “Dollar General penny shopping”.

The Freebie Guys page has over a million subscribers. Kendall Motzny gets a item list Dollar General is getting rid of inventory. The list is intended for store employees.

“What is happening is that Dollar General employees tend to disclose the list,” Motzny explained. “And they’ll disclose the list, and then people like me will post the ‘Watch out! Here’s what’s going to be a dime. Be ready. It’s gonna be a fun week.

The trick is to get to a store before employees have removed all the items from the shelves. Since the company has already erased them from the system, they will ring like a dime.

“This is not a published sale. This is not a published permission, ”warned The Freebie Guy. “So you can’t walk into a Dollar General and say, ‘Hey! I saw someone talking about your penny items. Where are they?'”

What you can get for a dime

Finding the items is half the fun. Some of the products purchased from Dollar General stores in the Houston area include originally $ 10 bathroom rugs, pom pom throws that were originally $ 15, decorative pillows, tea towels, LED candles and travel mugs. All the items cost only a dime.

“I had 247 Monster Energy drinks. And I paid $ 2.47 for 247 Monster Energy drinks, ”explained The Freebie Guy.

You can use the Dollar General app to check the price before you checkout the product. Make sure you get as many as you want the first time around, because once the cashier rings an item for a dime he won’t let you go back.

“They’re supposed to ask you where you found it, and then the employees are instructed to go back and find them and take them off the shelves,” Motzny explained.

The Freebie Guy donates much of his finds. Others have turned the treasure hunt into a side activity.

“There are people who make a full-time living doing liquidation purchases by reselling the products,” he said.

Dollar General’s penny deals are certainly the most popular right now, but you can also find penny deals at other retailers like Home Depot and Amazon.
