First-year quarterback helps Covina survive at Diamond Bar in football shootout – San Gabriel Valley Tribune


COVINA –Covina freshman quarterback Jake Duronslet returned after a tough first out last week and burned down the Diamond Bar defense for a night of five touchdowns to lead the Colts to a 58-47 out win. Championship vs. Diamond Bar visit Thursday night at Covina District Field.

“The freshman quarterback felt it,” Covina coach Dale Ziola said. “The kids haven’t bowed their heads after last week, taking on a behemoth like Glendora.

“They did a great job on the rebound and we still have to learn how to finish the game. But the kids didn’t give up and they showed it when we got up.

Duronslet threw for a high 303 yards and completed 14 for 18 assists.

“It was really good to come here and get a ‘W’ after a tough loss like this (last week),” said Duronslet. “We just played together.

“I felt comfortable there. Last week some guys were nervous and today we came out hungrier.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Rodriguez led all receivers with 152 yards on five receptions and scored two touchdowns for Covina (1-1).

Senior Colts Manuel Mendoza added two touchdown receptions and finished with 91 yards.

Colts senior running back Rey Fierro ran for 130 yards, a team high, and scored on a 64-yard touchdown run.

Diamond Bar (0-3) was led by a record 256 yards by senior running back Mikey Gorbea. He also had two long touchdowns of 49 and 73 yards and a short score of two yards.

“We knew what we were going to face, like David and Goliath,” Gorbea said. “We have things to work on and it feels good, but this game is over.”

Brahmas second-year receiver Kai Jenkins caught three passes for 90 yards, including a 70-yard reception.

Diamond Bar junior Maddox Bernardino rushed for 118 yards, including 50- and 60-yard points, and also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Ryan Lewis.

“We scored 40 points in the second half,” said Diamond Bar coach Jeff Reitz. “I have incredibly talented people.

“The running back (Gorbea) is a senior and he’s a 2,000-yard runner as you saw (Thursday). He is special. He’s fast and he’s a bull.

Covina took her first possession and covered 54 yards and scored on the first of Rodriguez’s two touchdowns.

After Diamond Bar was stopped in fourth and three at Covina’s 30-yard line, the Colts took just two games to take a 13-0 lead late in the quarter.

Duronslet rushed over and threw a short pass to Rodriguez and he passed the defense for a 68-yard touchdown.

Diamond Bar scored his first touchdown of the game on a 66-yard drive in seven games, culminating with the first of Gorbea’s two long runs. He went wild and passed the defense to lag the score, 13-7.

The score was unleashed from there, after a 20-7 lead over Covina at half-time, both teams totaled 65 points in the second half.
