Best Of Houston® 2021: Best Patio Bar
What’s really in a name, especially when it comes to handing out great drinks and good times? Heights Bier Garten and his loyal supporters might take a bit of shade by suggesting that its sprawling complex is a “patio bar,” especially since it says “bier garten” right on the sign up front. But, we’ll take the backlash if that means talking about the many benefits that make it a prime spot to sip afternoons and evenings.
Let’s start with the drinks, craft beers on one side and spirits on the other, separated as they are by rows of tables, chairs, and swings that we’ll get to in a minute. On a recent trip, the 94 taps at the beer and wine bar had rotations from as far away as Denmark (Odin’s Skull Honey Mead, with a whopping 19% BAC) and Piedmont, Italy (a rich Barbera); and, as close as Eureka Heights Brew Co. (a right and left turn on the road). Opposite, at Worcester’s Annex, dozens of house cocktails are available of all variations for those who enjoy alcohol.
Those drinks and a solid food menu set up the ‘patio bar’ experience, which gets the nod here due to all the space given to drinkers and outdoor socializers. In the age of six feet apart, drinking comfortably with friends, family and complete strangers from a safe distance in the great outdoors is a huge bonus and one of Heights Bier’s greatest assets. Garten. We tried to count the seats and stopped once we got to three digits, which we counted in just one section of the place. At the time, we were freaking out between his bars and just wanted to enjoy a sunny afternoon like the rest of our business.
