Below is a brief overview of cafes that have recently opened or are about to serve strong cups of coffee in Southern California.

Owners Scott Sohn and AJ Kim note that Loquat is a nod to South Korean coffee culture, although Loquat’s menu leans heavily on in-house roasted specialty coffee, with four choices of espresso, including a Samboni Gesha mixture subjected to an anaerobic 72 hours. , fermented and oxygenated. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed Mondays).

Second South LA Cafe location

South LA Cafe owners and South LA natives Joe and Celia Ward-Wallace opened in Exposition Park in 2019. The husband and wife team announced a second location in the same space as the medical offices of Kaiser Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw (3782 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), opening late October. The Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills arm will have a huge outdoor seating area for those seeking medical services, but will no doubt attract residents of the adjacent residential area.
